I've read several articles over the years saying that they actually did a practice raid on the east coast, can't remember the location, but there was a secret weapon involving fuel pipes under the shallows that pumped out fuel to be ignited and set the sea and landing barges alight. Apparently hundreds of Germans were burned alive with their bodies floating ashore for weeks, the War Department putting out statements that they were from planes shot down on bombing raids and the home defence unit being disbanded and sworn to secrecy because they thought the public would be horrified and demoralised at such a weapon being used on home soil. Questions were apparently asked about the bodies being dressed in army uniforms and not Luftwaffe gear as would be expected, but were hushed up!

Like you Pat, I read something similar often wondered if there was any truth in it. But like us perhaps the Germans were experimenting with commando style raids which we were never informed of!

Watched a doc on the Einsatzgruppen murders and cover up. They went back to places like Babi Yar in Ukraine where they'd shot 300,000 over a couple of weeks at the beginning of Barbarossa and used slave labour to dig up the rotting corpses and burn them before putting the ashes through a crusher. Didn't do them any good in the end though!
