It used to be that time served in the army worked for you on social housing lists when the councils ran the points system and points awarded during 22 yrs service ensured you went to the front of the queue. By the time I was leaving, not that I needed a council house having already bought over here, the system had completely changed and lads were told that at the front of the queue were 'Rehabilitated' prisoners and looneys released into 'Care In The Community', single mothers and of course immigrants. poor old 'Tommy' can f.ck right off and find himself a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Rudyard had it right in his Tommy poem, only wanted when there's protection needed from some nasty chaps knocking on the door then bugger off ya thugs! 😡 🤮

Certainly is Jack. There were a couple of lads who joined up with me and never thought of buying a house, secure in the knowledge of the state looking after them as they had their parents before them who had lived in council houses all their lives. Near to discharge date they applied to their local council whose list they'd been on for practically their whole 22 year career, only to be told 'Sorry that system no longer applies, you have to start from scratch when you leave service and might get a place in 10 years if you're lucky!' Of course trying to get a mortgage was impossible with no proof of long term income and they were classed as making themselves voluntarily homeless by leaving army accommodation, so had to start paying rent from their lump sum or move in with relatives. Was I glad I'd had the forethought to buy a place here 5 years before I left while I could still get a mortgage! Whatever happened to that 'Covenant' the wankers in Wastemonster bragged about bringing in to look after us for life?

Pat I signed on Aldershot council list for years mate, you had to sign on every six months to remain active.when I was coming out, I was told that I had been on a deferred list for servicemen. And would be at the back of the proper list.

The village numpty old John B, couldn't get a job at the pit because of what's termed today Learning Difficulties. So he used to go around shoveling in the miners free coal when it was dropped outside their coal houses. People used to say look at that silly bugger hoying coal in for two Bob a load.

My reply to that was old John's not that daft, he's earning as much as  a pit shifter without the hassle. And you can't take it away from him he's grafting for a living. So good on him doing what no other bugger wants to do!
