Yeah John Humphrey's my old Troop Commander was like that, an old WW2 Vet nothing phased him. A Great guy who passed away. Fairly recently, that was sad news, I among many mourn his passing.

1962 summer season at Great Yarmouth.
Left to right - Peter Cavanagh, Peter Jay, Marty Wilde, The King Brothers, Don Arrol, Karl Denver, Frieda Hall, Jimmy Clitheroe, Harry Secombe, Yana and of course Billy Fury. I was walking along the road when K Denver asked us a bout his car he had  a Scots accent I had never been further than London at that time

I believe that him and Spike Milligan were both WW2 vets. And old Jimmy Edwards flew a mission or two over Arnham. A worldly wise generation mate!

Spike was in the RA in North Africa and Harry was Signals. The first time they met was when Spike's 7.2" gun fired and slid over a cliff into the wadi that Harry was sitting in with his headphones on, oblivious in the back of his truck. Suddenly a madman stuck his head through the canvas and shouted "Anyone seen a gun round 'ere?" The start of a long partnership! 🤣

You're right Jack he was, but was in the signals wing rather than on the guns which was how the event above, narrated by Harry, occurred. I remember reading the first of Spike's books Hitler His Part In My Downfall when I was at boarding school followed by Rommel, Gunner Who? and the Mussolini one who's title I forget. Very funny men and as Dave said a decent bee's winger in Harry's case.
