Watched a Doco on BBC 4 last night
Dave Tompkins was a petty thief who craved adventure. His career as an international mercenary began in Africa and took him all over the world - to Afghanistan, Croatia and later to Colombia, where he led a team commissioned to assassinate notorious Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar. He went out with Callan and Copland to Angola he was the explosives guy in the team. While laying some mines he was injured by one going off. Got casavact back to uk just before Callan executed some of his men. Peter McAleese featured. We had one guy in our squadron who was out there he told me that the only way he survived was to keep to SOP’s staying in the bush and no tracks/roads

🤣 🤣Â
Ex 3 Para Sgt Mick Southall talks about his 28 year military career, the Falklands conflict and being only 17 years of age at the time of fighting in the battle for Mount Longdon.
Interesting listen that Jack. Great to hear former Reg lads experiences, makes me feel an even older twat tho, Mick enlisted in 79 age 17,a long time after me aged 19 in 1966 which is now more than a lifetime away but unlke Elvis Presley I aint left the room Yet! but very much feeling, "All Shook Up!"
A lot of our experiences made us old before our time, but touchwood I'm not suffering mentally like some poor souls(Mind that could be debateable!)
Mick has mellowed in older age, when he was in the A/TK Pl he was known as "Sick Mouthall" for his gobbiness and stroppiness, but all round good soldier all the same and good mate.
It's true Pat, it's not what a person looks like,it's what actions he does that counts!
👍
A fine example is when Uzek fought that big useless lump Tyson Fury whose tactical skill is catching punches, leaning on his adversary to tire him before trying to club em to death! Uzek half his size but exponent of the "Sweet Science" just boxed his head off for 12 rounds! A pic of the two side by side would prompt the uninitiated layman to comment, "Not a fair fight, the big lump will batter him!" Memories of the Greatest when he shook the World and tamed "The Big Ugly Bear" back in the halcyon days of heavyweight World Championship boxing!
sport is big money now Dave
That's what spoils it Jack, although it's been going on for years. Match fixing is big money and it takes a brave man to tell the criminal fraternity to get stuffed.
I think that's what happened to Freddie Mills, do you think that assumption sounds right Dave?
Spot on that Bob.In the 195os when the Mafia ruled the roost in bent az an arabs dagger boxing. Only one trainer stood up to em n caused their demise and that was the late Cus Damato, trainer of World Champions, Floyd Paterson, Jose Torres and Mike Tyson. Before the first fight between Paterson and Sony Liston, the Mafia paid Cus a visit to talk business and were met by Cus with an ice pick taped to the palm of his punching fist and held it to the throat of one of em and they fukked off at the double! Liston was always in the clutches of the Mafia and rumour has it that they killed him and disguised it as suicide. Big money sport is always dodgy as Jack says, too much easy money to be made off the bookmakers best mates, Us the punters!
Sad when you think about it, because of these twats you can never be sure that what you paid to watch hasn't been fixed and somebody is going to take a dive!
Remember Jack Bodell? eee dint av to cos eee wuz sponsored by Axminster!
🤣 he spent a bit of time on it Dave.
Biggest laff wuz when eee fought Duck Egg Danny Macalinden. Danny Decked im n all the Pikeys dived inta the ring n declared owd Dan the new British Heavy weight Champion while the ref just stood and watched. The result stood and is in the record books!
