We were better off without the miracle of the internet. Useful information in an instant is not worth the cost of social medias trolling and attention desperation."

Deliberately avoided facebook, tweet, twitter, and any other birdlike sound. Worry about my 20 year old grandson who cannot even eat a meal without communicating with some arse. His girl friend was beside herself for weeks because some t**t had posted something derogatory about her. I worry about their ability to deal with 'real' life face to face issues. Sad!

ha-ha, the millennials do not have a fuuckin clue about real life. I believe national service needs to come back. you can serve in the military or civil duties, clean up the country side whatever, they the kids need to believe in something....wait a minute they do it is called social media.

Agree Billy, 'national service' does not have to mean military, could be police, fire service, hospitals, old folks homes, work with deprived kids or even that thing the yanks had where they sent them overseas to get water to communities etc. What grips my f***ing shit is that our motorways and major roads are litter dumps, the filth and squalor is unbelievable, what the f**k anyone visiting this country must think of us does not bear thinking about. Then we have about 80,000 young blokes in nick with the best gym's, swimming pools, libraries, medical care etc. Put the t**ts on chain gangs to clean the shitholes up, time sentence off for work carried out, run away and time increase. It will probably be against their 'human rights' to have to work. F**ed up is one way to describe it!

You're right Billy young people don't have a clue to 'real life' as we knew it, but is that really such a bad thing?

We had a better, education including free further education, and better job prospects, with the likelihood of a real apprenticeship for those that wanted it. We currently have better health, housing and lifestyles and overall standard of living in general.


When I think of leaving a cold draughty house to go to school on snowy/pissing wet days, with holes in my shoes or even going to school on alternate days while my brother and I shared the wearing of my mothers shoes, and having only one set of clothing for school and play, i'm glad we've progressed beyond that. Also the food choices etc, were far simpler, basically take it or leave it. Chicken was a once a year luxury for example and there was far less entertainment than now. I think, overall, we were grateful for what we had.

That said, I believe these days it's swung far too far in the opposite direction, and youngsters real life in terms of expectations is a universe away from ours. I don't think that NS would work well these days, whether in or out of the forces.

Young people, backed up by the rampant PC brigade, now seem to have a disproportionate sense of self entitlement. In their eyes, it's their 'right'
have what ever they want. The media in the form of so called celebrity gives them aspirational images/lifestyle to aim for whilst the reality is they do not, cannot, or will not put the effort in to achieve it.

I don't think NS in the forces would be a good thing, (for the forces) either. I know it worked before, but that was a much different generation. I believe NS would do youngsters the world of good in terms of building discipline, (esp self), fitness, confidence, respect (esp self), and trust. The experience of working in teams, the experiencing of things they probably wouldn't see/do in civvy st would help build a level of trust within them. All of this, could/would produce confident, responsible, decent citizens willing to do their bit and better themselves, (assuming they were decent to start with). Forcing them to join up would be detrimental to the forces in my opinion.

This is due to a number of factors, the false sense of entitlement I mentioned, their overblown perception of themselves as too good for menial tasks. For example, the school (residential), I worked in, used to, up to the 80's, get the boys out on the surrounding streets in coveralls picking up litter and generally clearing up, some even doing some gardening for the local pensioners.

I suggested we get the boys to do their own area cleaning within the school. You should've seen the looks I got from the PC brigade. They explained it used to happen, but some sandal wearing lentil chomper social worker thought it was degrading/demeaning for the boys and it stopped. I intended to mention adventure training for the NS reasons stated above, but decided against it, especially when I was informed that one of the lentil chompers had received their PhD using the basic thesis that this type of training was of no benefit you Young People. I did make a point of telling her later she was talking shite.

Ron, to get them doing similar projects as part of a civvy NS scheme wouldn't work either mate. I've seen these projects as part of a court imposed punishment, and to be honest they're a joke. In any case, if this work is there to be done they should create the jobs and pay people to do them. I think this would work, as the boys at my school would do nothing for nothing, but as soon as money is mentioned they are game.

agree with bob and standinthedoor. here we have companies and private citizens that ADOPT A HIGHWAY and the convicts get a small stipend to clean up the sides of the roads. everything form paper trash to plastic bottles and buckets, fast food crap and lets not forget fuuckin starbucks, $7 for a coffee that is more like a icecream served in waxed paper containers and i guess a free pass to throw it anywhere ye like.

The numbers who,d bin twatted wuz astounding, many finishing up wi broken limbs n ending up in hossy. SIX.....of the best. Headmaster told me at 14 he was sick of caning me. lol. He tried to get round me earlier ( I think) by making me the Milk Monitor. Remember that little bottle of milk we had every day ? Well I was flogging to anybody with a spare copper and somebody shopped me. So there we was again. Bend over !!!!!
