Thinking Strange Thoughts
Now I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I should imagine that I would get very few arguments when I say that the greatest record ever made is “Two Little Boys Had Two Little Toys” by Rolf Harris. It not only contains those emotional, heartfelt lyrics, but the kind of toe-tapping rhythms that you can nod your head along to as you dust the cat or polish the lawnmower, and of course when you combine all this with the voice and charisma of a superstar like Rolf, you have an unforgettable performance. You may think I’m a bit old fashioned, though obviously in a boyishly good looking kind of way, but I have to say that they do not write songs like they used to, I remember my dad used to say exactly the same thing. He’d say “Steve, they do not write songs like they used to”. Of course in his case he was wrong, I listened to some of the music that he thought was good and to be honest, unless you first drank a bucket of strong coffee, you were in grave danger of nodding off halfway through the song. I suppose one day my son will say the same thing, he’ll say “They don’t write songs like they used to” of course he’d be even more wrong cause the music he listens to is even worse than my dad’s.
Still, as luck would have it and by an amazing coincidence, the music I listened to was really great. Superb songs with meaningful lyrics like “Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheap Cheap” by Middle of the Road, remember the legendary “Copacabana” by Barry Manilow, “Billy Don’t be a Hero” by Paper Lace and who could forget the classic “Long Haired Lover from Liverpool” by the boss Little Jimmy Osmond.
I don’t know about you but it sends a shiver down my spine just thinking of these great songs. It just makes you want to superglue the revolving disco ball to the lounge ceiling, put up the strobe lights and boogie around in your platform sandals.
Mind you, fashions of the 60’s and 70’s have not aged quite as well as the songs have. My normal outfit in those days consisted of black and white check hipster flairs, these were worn so low on the hips that if I coughed they would often fall down. I would wear a wide leather belt to hold these up and if I did it up too tightly I could actually sing the high notes on a Bee Gees song. These pants were complimented, and I use the term loosely, by an equally tight purple shirt. With this I would wear an extremely wide tie, with a design which was such a lurid explosion of colour that now I can only visualise it if someone hits me on the head with a large mallet.
Of course in those days I had shoulder length hair with a parting down the middle, funnily enough , though styles have come and gone, I still wear my hair with a parting down the middle, only now the parting covers my entire head.
For thirty years I lived in fear of someone finding a photo of me in that outfit, but fortunately it looks like I managed to destroy them all. Obviously I was much younger then and a bit of a wild man, but even nowadays, I will occasionally pour a glass of medicinal port and put on Cliff Richards Greatest Hits. I suppose once a rebel always a rebel.

OPENING B&B
The first thing you need to do is think about the sort of person you wish to invite into your house. To help you with this I have put together a “Guest Profile” which should prove invaluable.
First of all, very young people tend to talk loudly, get lost and wet the bed. Funnily enough this also applies to very old people, so I’m afraid both of these groups are out.
Teenagers are also out, the main reason for this is that they sulk a lot, evidently it as something to do with their hormones, also the vast majority have acne and dress badly.
Now, in the B&B business, it is vital to start the day with a good atmosphere at the breakfast table, this sets the tone for the rest of the day. There is nothing more likely to ruin a guests day, than for them to glance across the breakfast table and see a big sulky face full of acne staring back at them, and this face is attached to someone wearing a lurid t-shirt with a picture of the devil on it, which is tucked into a pair of large underpants, which in turn are tucked into a pair of baggy, tartan pants which seem to fasten just above the knees.
Moving on, people between their late teens and mid forties should be avoided, this is because they have too much energy and tend to stay up late. Once a person reaches their late forties, they get worn out after a hard days sightseeing and go to bed early, this is obviously a good thing as you can turn the lights off and save money.
Extremely sociable people are a definite no-no as they insist on telling you their entire life’s history and you can not get any work done.
Now, pay particular attention to this, anyone with hair is a big nuisance, most of your day as a B&B owner is spent cleaning up hair-from the shower, the sinks, the settee, the ceiling, the fridge, infact anywhere a guest walks there seems to be a trail of hair. I, personally have removed enough hair from the bathroom sinks to make several wigs.
Without wishing to appear sexist, it is probably better to leave woman off your list as they tend to get make-up on the towels, they also seem to wash their hair more often than men do which uses more hot water and consequently costs more money. Please note! Someone who does not wash at all is a huge bonus and should probably be given a discount.
The height of your guest depends a lot on the design of your B&B,so I can only give you a general guide here, and that is, if you have any guest over 1.8 metres tall, they will find something to bang their heads on. This brings me to another important point, a good first aid kit is essential, and I do not just mean a couple of plasters and an aspirin. You Will Need a full first aid kit complete with operating theatre, because if there is anything in the house that a guest can trip over, slip on or bang their head on, they will. You can hide a banana skin underneath an heavy wardrobe at the furthest corner of your attic and somehow, your guest will get lost, find their way into your attic, move your heavy wardrobe and slip over on your banana skin causing some form of injury which will require your Full First Aid Kit.
So, to sum up, your ideal guest will be a forty-eight year old bald man, about 1.6metres tall, who keeps to himself and rarely washes.
A steady stream of this sort of guest will soon give you a thriving business.

Now the competition for Most Boring Event is very close, but my vote goes to that stupid cycling race, where competitors pedal around the track so slowly that they are nearly going backwards, every now and again they will almost come to a standstill, they just wobble about in the saddle, have a bit of a breather and then gently carry on. Sometimes you will see snails overtaking them. Then, just as the crowd are nodding off to sleep, its as if the cyclists suddenly wake up and realize that they are in a race, then we get about five seconds of actual racing to the finish line.
I would love to know who came up with this concept. “I have this great idea for a race, you get super fit athletes, put them on a $10,000 bike and make them go as slowly as they can around the track without falling off” What’s even stranger is that the organizers must have thought that I was a good idea .
It seems obvious to me that, if I was interested enough, I could easily win the gold medal in this event. I would just leap onto my trusty old mountain bike, and as soon as the race started I would pedal off as fast as my little legs could carry me, I would just be a blur hurtling around the track. Meanwhile my opponents would be dawdling along on their Super Bikes. Obviously, once they started to race properly, they would start to catch up a bit, but it would be far too late and I would be celebrating in the bar with the gold medal around my neck before they picked up a decent bit of speed.
Now coming a very close second in the Most Boring Event must be the Walking Race. This is where highly trained, super fit athletes go for a walk. Basically, they just stroll around, do a bit of sightseeing, and the one who happens to wander into the stadium first gets a gold medal. Now you would think that the judges would tell them to hurry along abit, but no, infact the judges tell them off if they break into a trot. The judges actively encourage laziness, they don’t mind you walking quickly but if you show a bit of initiative and break into a jog, you get disqualified. Now, what sort of race is this? I often walk to the pub but surely that does not make me an athlete. If you are going to have a Walking Race, then you may as well have a Reading a Good Book Race or a Sitting Down With A Cup Of Tea Watching The Grass Grow Race.
Apart from this boring stuff, there are also a lot of silly events coming into the Olympics that aren’t really sports at all. Stuff like ten pin bowling and ballroom dancing, flower arranging, that sort of thing. People even want to get Chess included. Now how can you possibly call Chess a sport, how often do you hear of someone going to the doctors and he says “Your 10 kilos overweight, I want you to take up Chess”. It just does not happen and the main reason is that you could play Chess for the next fifty years and only lose half a calorie.
In ancient times when the Olympics first started, there were just the three events, and they were; The Marathon, The Discus and the Fighting a Hungry Lion Armed Only With a Sausage event. Now I think it would be a damn good idea if we got back to this sort of thing. Also it would be good if we got back to the right spirit of the Games. When I was a young gymnast growing up in England, I was always taught that it was the taking part, that was important, not the winning. Mind you that could well account for why I never won anything.
