The UK is mimicking the US. As Cameron claimed, cutting welfare/benefits is not done on the grounds of costs. I agree, it's PURELY ideological. Neo Liberal ideology to be precise. People need to get away from the traditional Con/Lab Dem/Rep traditional hostilities and see what's really going on. Con and Lab really ARE in it together.
Neo Libs just DO NOT believe in a welfare state. In the US Clinton Mk1 was lobbied to take benefits away from the disabled and from disabled veterans "to encourage the disabled into work", even the language is the same. The money saved was to fund a right wing project that I can't remember at the moment, (may have been subsidies to oil Co's). He also signed the Glass Stiegel act which allowed the banks to run amok and gamble with peoples money. In the UK Paw Broon sold the UK's gold reserves off (at the behest of Goldman Sachs), and adopted the "light touch" approach to the banks. Meanwhile ATOS and Maximus et al have been paid BILLIONS by HMG to carry out 5Milion disability assessments that many doctors claim are unfair. This has resulted in a reduction of only 81,000 claims. Obviously they "encouraged a lot of disabled into work"...OH...and don't forget the suicides.
Both countries tolerate tax avoidance by the large corporations. We've seen what happens here with e.g. Google. One example I saw recently from the states was GEC. Despite having $108BILLION stashed offshore, they received $38Bn in subsidies, paid fukkall taxes and then got a tax REBATE of around $2.5B. Nice work etc...
Can you see the pattern here? Sick and disabled being screwed banks given a free hand. This is NOT done by accident.
