Never used the back pack though, as it was crap.
used to cut off the clips to the front pouches cut 2 slits to feed the belt through.
Then a cord tied at the base and pulled around to pull them away from the front.
So when you hit the deck they were to one side.
On active, we only used belt order, but with a quick release belt cut off the ties for equipment.
Also the camp beds had the two end flaps, which a couple of us who carried the LMG's (the brit one as well as the Auss)
and made our own front flat pouched for the mags.
the kidney pouches I used to carry the energa with the fins sticking out.
Bet thats not in any museum.

      It sure was Ian.
I was talking to my old Plt Com in Blackpool, and he reminded me of some things we did all them years ago in Aden.
Things we were involved with other Reg's that even in our own Coy, didnt know what others did.... Strange.
Will be meeting up with him and some of our own plt's from the same time served. When we will have more time to chat, this year sometime.
Sort of Plt /Coy reunion, can't wait.

Was issued that as a recruit in 15 PARA in 1988.

Spent 2 weeks civi wages on a Bergen after I passed P Coy as TA didn't get them issued.

Not sure if it is just folklore but I seem to remember being told by many different sources that it was a chick that designed the 58 webbing?
I just don't understand why they won't shut the hell up while I practice my people skills....

Probably one with her tits in a funny place, who modeled the ammo pouches on her bra,and the kidney pouches on her back tits!

Whoever designed it it was a bloody sight better than that old 38 pattern webbing we had during training. Polishing brass and blanco was a bloody nightmare. And packing it out with stiff cardboard for kit layout was horrific.

Have to agree Bob, when 58 came about, it certainly made a difference during a tab. We had 44 ptn prior .

And it was certainly better than what replaced it,the only advantage being it didn't hold water or shrink like the old canvas, but you couldn't carry any decent amount of kit in it!Of course by the time it arrived I'd moved into remfing areas, and so didn't use it much, along with that shit first version of the SA80.
