The Korean War is a pretty much a forgotten war, the only war memorial I've ever seen to it in UK was in Scotland, a big field in the middle of nowhere quite near Falkirk, with a hut in the middle of it with a book with the names of the blokes who were killed in it, and that was it. I don't know of any other memorials to it. If it wasn't for that film MASH, I don't suppose many people would ever have heard of it at all.

There's one in Kilmarnock too:
"We're surrounded on all sides... Good... you're obviously in the right place".

Cant see it mate. Was he still alive then ?Originally posted by Pat Harley View PostFarrah's book,I think it was called Edge Of The Sword, about his experiences and capture/escapes during Korea is worth a read, although somebody gave him a slagging over it a few years back, claiming he was in cahoots with his captors!"If they control your speech.....they control your life"

Old lad I used to have a pint with passed away recently (RIP John)was in Korea, he used to go out and recover US or Brit armour if it was recoverable and repair it after it had been hit or broken down. He reckoned Michael Cain (actor) was a tank commander out there. John was quite bitter about 'their' war not being either understood or commemorated in any way. i am sure he did not know about the Scottish Korean War Memorial Bathgate (to Scottish soldiers of course).Wonder if they are commemorated at the Arboretum?

Ron, from Wiki on Kilmarnock; "... it pays tribute to all those who fought in the First World War, Second World War, Korean War...".Originally posted by standinthedoor View PostOld lad I used to have a pint with passed away recently (RIP John)was in Korea, he used to go out and recover US or Brit armour if it was recoverable and repair it after it had been hit or broken down. On Bathgate here; https://www.visitwestlothian.co.uk/t...-war-memorial/
"...The shrine is built in the traditional style of a Korean shrine and contains name boards listing all the 1,114 men who died. It is the only memorial in the UK dedicated to the Korean War that does this...""We're surrounded on all sides... Good... you're obviously in the right place".

Re: Farrah The Para... The battle of the Imjin River.
There is a Korean War memorial on Victoria embankment in London, strangely enough, a gift from the South Korean government, which has an excellent bronze statue of a British soldier. Pity the British Government didn't feel it necessary to put something up, but thank you South Koreans, who treat the British graves in Korea in a similar way that the Dutch people do at the British cemetery, getting their children to lay flowers on the British graves, showing their gratitude for the sacrifice made by blokes, many of whom would have been National Servicemen, who would have had to get an atlas out, to find out where Korea was.

Jim, Bill Speakman VC had a go at P Coy but did not get through. Not sure whether he simply failed physically or 'politics' came in to it. Did not realise he had passed away, thought he was at last Remembrance Sunday being wheeled past, sorry to hear that RIP Bill Speakman VCOriginally posted by jim scott View PostWhen i went to register for National service in 58 the recruiting Sgt was Bill Speakman VC , KOSB, RIP, gained during the Korean war, said I wanted to go to the Paras, signed on for 6 wi the reg, thank feck when you seen the rest o the British army then
