Wore one with pride, in the shadow of men who had worn it before us. Was utterly astonished when it was removed from airborne forces in the UK. Must have been a hat general

That's a long lost example of a mattress pegasus, sewn to the mattress of certain 9 Sqn members, the pegasus changing colour at the touch of piss on a saturday night,to alert the SSM on a monday inspection, that treatment for a weak bladder was required!Usually a couple of hours running round the square with half a dozen damp mattresses held aloft did the trick!

I think the SSM already had a fair idea about the mattasses, prior to reaching the rooms, because he had to climb over them drying outside, before he reached the rooms.
I have always set myself a very low standard, and constantly fail to achieve it.

Ah yes,but the dishonesty inherent in you sapper chappies might lead you to get one of your plumbing type mates to cut a pipe and claim flooding was the cause, hence the need for the waterproof pegasus patch, that changed from blue to green on detecting urine!Of course there was no need for such a thing in 3 Para, where we were much more adult, and drank responsibly,as per government guidelines, and never wet the bed!

I've been looking for the picture of the famous Antrim Mattress bonfire, but can't find it, Pat Neal says he may have a copy.

Me and a civvies mate slept in a 2 bunk bed cabin aboard a barge in Amsterdam opposite the drug rehabilitation floating barge back in 1983.

our two roomies were lads from 2Para who we had bumped into on the Norland coming over from Hull. To be continued....

It can only come as a complete surprise to all on here that they would burn, given the permanently damp state of them!I suspect a misuse of POL stores was needed for ignition!

Well it was a warm summer in 73 and they had been left outside, presumably in the hope that the fresh air would return their well known G10 flowery bouquet in order that the miscreants may save their hard earned and not be charged damages. Sadly this failed and the alleged (mis)use of accelerants may or may not have been necessary.

Mattresses ??? What they? Must getting f***ing old! Went to Lancs Fusiliers barracks and was given a huge sack and told to go behind the QM store and fill it with staw which were in bales, that wuz mi mattress. No need for you blokes to piss on them, it smelt as though the horses had already done that. Scratching all f***ing night, and you filled a pillow case with the same stuff, with straw coming through the pillow case and in to your f***ing ears. When I left to go to depot Para I expected to have to fill be 'palliase' (?) with building rubble, being such a tough outfit, astonished to get a mattress, sheets, pillow etc, thought this will do me.

We had to do the same one year at Sennelager in Germany,as there were 2 battalions booked in at the same time, and 3 drew the short straw.(See what I did there?)We were given mattress covers, and told to fill them from the stables behind the sheds they'd put us in,and then given pallets to keep us off the floor.Think that might've been the time of the great battle between us and the Irish Rangers in the NAAFI.
