We used them on active in Aden Dave, that's how I ripped out the headphones of a scout, by carrying them in the back pouches.
Oh and there were no tanks up Country hey?

The Sergeant is Paddy Smythe, not the one that we both know. later became a QMSI, the picture doesn't surprise me. Because Paddy was daft enough to instruct people to fire the Energa from the shoulder, balasite cartridge enough to put your shoulder out of joint and give you a facial makeover. We always fired it butt on the ground at hessian screens, think if I'd ever had to use the bastard in earnest I would have been a dead man ! Same era as the 3.5 rocket launcher, who's only saving grace was it stripped down to two pieces and was light to carry !

Quite a kick and you fired it lying down, feet facing the target and rifle but in the ground - at least that was how I was taught

yes, but remember, bob is 9 Sqn. we don't lie down on the job.
I have always set myself a very low standard, and constantly fail to achieve it.

                    Re: For Bob...

We did fire practice rounds somewhere in Aldershot with 3 troop, reading what you say about the way to hold the rifle when firing makes me wonder if we actually stood up like the guy in the picture and fired? I thought we did but it was a long time ago, and we only did it once, seem to remember the round would splatter chalk on contact.

We always fired it from the kneeling position, butt in the ground, they reckon the effective range was about 75 yards, but ask yourself would you want to tackle armour at that range with that Mickey Mouse bit of kit. No thanks. The PIAT with a feckin great spring to project the missile would be more preferable !

Well did anybody ever actually knock a Panzer out with one of these I mean, after all, the Shermans were lobbing rounds at the Krauts that were bouncing off the Tigers in Normandy. It would have to be driven by the German Blind School Regiment.

Come to think of it I think a VC was won at Arnhem with one of these. Major Caine VC put three away did he not ?
