  • Just a Quicky

I dug my old field telescope out of it's box the other day, and found the rubberised body work had disintergrated into a horrible gungy sticky mess. Anybody any ideas which is the best way to remove it without buggering the scope up?

Petrol is often the answer for that sticky stuff Bob,and a stiff brush, but obviously don't let it get inside the scope!

Use plastic if you have to scrape out any lumps of gunge Bob, it won't (shouldn't) scratch the body.

Meths might not be a strong enough solvent, but worth a try!

Acetone may be another answer Bob,or strong acetone containing nail polish remover. Be careful what brush you use as it will dissolve most plastic ones, and keep it away from any plastic lens etc!

Cheers Pat, pleased you mentioned plastic brushes. I'll use a pure Bristle it's safer. Mind I couldn't afford Hamilton perfection these days, to expensive!

Just to let you know, that meths worked fine, took it off with a rough old duster dipped in meths and an old toothbrush. So now hurrah! no sticky black crap over my hands. Cheers guys!

Glad to hear of your success Bob,and no need for harsher solvents as the meths worked. Have a meths cocktail to celebrate!
