  • Gurd Von Runstedt

Gerd von Rundstedt was born in 1875 at
Aschersleben in Saxony, the son of a
Hussar Officer who later became a
Major General. At the tender age of
twelve Gerd entered the cadet military
academy, then rose to command the
    German army.

    Field Marshall Gerd Von Rundstedt
    1875-1953

Twelve years of age his career began
quickly maturing from boy to man.
A junior ensign at just seventeen
    quickly adapting to military routine.

Sardonic by nature, true to his line
    inefficiency quick to malign.
    Standard uniform studiously dressed
military know how his family blessed.

A Major General his father became
Gerd determined to better his game.
Gaining experience through the Great War
    surviving this as Company Major.

Not a supporter of Nazi success
But government orders he would address.
In 'thirty two came Marshall Law
    social democrats made to withdraw.

    Conflicting earnestly with Hitlers men
    calling Hitler a comedian.
    Taking retirment in 'thirty eight
    Hitler then would reinstate.

Making him commander of Army Group North
into Poland he immediately set forth.
    Polands defeat a great success
But Rundstedt disliking the murderous SS.

Getting a move away from them
torture and cruelty he did condemn.
With Army Group South he took command
leading the invasion of Russian land.

    Barbarossa initially a great success
but winters chill the Russians would bless.
Rundstedt requested to withdraw his men
to re-equip and attend to them.

Hitler refused and ordered them on
    orchestrating his own swan song.
    Sacking Rundstedt on the spot
Rundstedt lucky not to be shot.

    Reinstated the very next year
    Supreme Commander showing no fear.
Arguing with Hitler, Goering as well
    Hitler again bid him farewell.

    In 'fourty four reinstated again
as Supreme Commander he would remain
Hitler demanding Gurd stop the rot
at last conceding he’d lost the plot.

    Never tried at Nuremburgh
    a soldiers soldier, undeterred.
    Sraight, honest, the thinking kind
one of the few that kept his mind.

Very good John, in many ways it's a good job Hitler took no notice of his Generals. Because had he done so it may have extended the war greatly at the least, or the worst scenario being we could have had our arses kicked. Von Rundsted, Guderian, Kesselring, Rommel, Manstien. To name a few were very able commanders however they were not all averse to the Nazi cause. This came to the fore when Staufenburg attempted to take Hitlers life, and paid the penalty for it. Had he been backed by the above mentioned, many lives could have been saved, however the excuse was given as, We have all sworn allegiance to Hitler personally therefore cannot deviate from it until his death. In other words we all like our own lives, and don't want to be hung with piano wire

      Great post johnb

The Officer Corp should have killed Hitler Bob/johnb.
Then opened the way for the Yanks and British et al to gallop as far East as possible and contain that Russian advance. Who then should have demanded the Russians pull back to their own border. Part of the reason they could not was the many death camps...and the fanatics. I reckon they could have been overcome though. Another problem was the Russian casualties. 20 000 000. That gave them clout. It was a huge mistake on Germany's side. that last eight months. I was obvious it was over for them. Then again those camps were a huge liability. They did not want the Allies opening them up.

There's no need for ****ing foul language in a poetry site unless it's in the scribe itself. Get a thwarting grip you feckers. I remember when this forum was awash with wordsmiths and witty banal banter worthy of global acclaim.
And another thing..., rhyming without timing and depth is like a shit shag, unremarkable.
