just wandering around in London
not sure where i was at'
i came across a crippled soldier
where on the ground he sat.
Upon his chest were medals
showing deeds of bravery done,
a proud man down upon his luck
his comrades now long gone.
E smiled at me as i walked up
and looked deep in my eyes,
his earnest gaze showed wisdom
and it stopped me passing by.
The old man turned to me and asked
"How many friends have you"
why 10 to 30 i replied
and i named off quite a few.
He rose up slowly his face showed pain
and he slowly shook his head,
"A lucky child you really are
with so many friends" he said.
"But think of what your saying
there is much that you don't know,
a friend is not just some one
to whom you say hello.
A friends a tender shoulder
on which to softly cry,
A well to pour your troubles down
and raise your spirits high.
A friends a hand to pull you up
from darkness and despair,
when all your other so called friends
have helped to put you there.
a true friend is an ally
who can't be moved or bought,
a voice to keep your name alive
when others have forgot.
But most of all a friend is heart
a strong and sturdy wall,
for from the hearts of true friends
comes the greatest love of all.
So think on what I've said to you
for every word is true,
So answer once again my child
How many friends have you?"
And as there he stood before me
awaiting my reply,
till when i softly answered him
"If I'm lucky one have i"
the smile he gave was infectious
and i caught it like the flu,
for when i left and walked away
I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner
and someone saw my grin,
and when he smiled i realised
I had passed it onto him.
I really thought of that soldiers smile
and realised it's worth,
a single smile just like his
could travel round the earth.
So if you feel a smile begin
don't leave it undetected,
Just remember that old soldiers smile
and get the world infected.
