  • Major General JDC Graham CB CBE

The Regimental Lieutenant Colonel regrets to inform you of the death of Major General JDC Graham CB CBE who died in Barbados on 14 December 2012.

John David Carew Graham was born on 18 January 1923, educated at Cheltenham College and commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1942. He first served with Airborne Forces 1947-48 as a member of 5th (Scottish) Bn The Parachute Regiment, returned to serve as 2i/c of 2 PARA in 1963 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to command the 1st Bn The Parachute Regiment Group from 1964-66. He served as the Regimental Colonel from 1968-69 before going on to command The Sultan of Oman’s Armed Forces in 1970. After an appointment as assistant COS in CINCENT at Brunssum he was promoted to Major General and appointed as GOC Wales in 1976 until his eventual retirement in 1978.

On retirement he took up a post of Secretary to the Administrative Trustees of the Chevening Estate, residing at his house in Kent until 1986 and then, after moving to Barnes, SW London, he assisted the Staff of The Parachute Regiment at the Regimental HQ, Aldershot, before his final retirement to Barbados in 1991.

A Memorial Service is provisionally planned for Thursday 7 March 2013 in London with more detail to follow once the arrangements have been confirmed. The Regiment has offered its full support to the family who have asked that the memorial service reflect his time in the military and in particular with the Regiment.

    PD RODGERS
    Regimental Secretary

    Rest in Eternal Peace Sir.

My Company Commander when I was in the Argylls - Great man and easy to get on with. We exchanged letters until his recent death in December. Many fond memories. RIP General John.
