A Soldier of War
Affectionately known as a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
Beasted! Busted! He gets things done, always real, never pretend...
Full of wit and prankster fun, sharpened steel his closest friend.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
Rarely he salutes a 2nd pip, no respect - nor call him sir...
Ill-disciplined; no penchant for drill - a spell in gaol does not deter.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
One-two-three-four pints down town, five-six; face now a frown...
Seven-eight; he’s brawling now - all the way back to barracks-gate.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
He charges the line, trench after bloodied trench...
On through the shit, guts, vomit, horror - fouled stench.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
He’s a soldier of war, with no time for peace...
Rues the day of the cannon’s cease.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
He’s our brother-in-arms, friend and mucker, leader of men...
Earning the battle honours, again and again.
He’s a “bag-o’-shite”
But hell can he fight!
He’s a soldier of war, not peace......
