A HOMELESS SOLDIER.
He looked at me face to face…
and eye to eye without disgrace
He spoke to me then he said…
... “When does the peace ever begin”…
will these nightmares ever end?”
The tears I shed burn my eyes…
but no one seems to know when I cry
A rifle has become a part of me…
this is not who I want to be
The stench of sulfur permeates the air…
and smoking weapons are everywhere
When is there peace, does it ever come…
my heart is hurting my mind is numb
I watched him close as he looked at me…
A homeless man, prior military
He continued to talk about the war…
and all the horrors’ of the night before
The battle goes on inside his head…
as he looks on the street to lay his head
Unshaved and ragged his life goes on…
but the best of him had been taken and gone
He still hears the gunshots in his head…
as he braves for the night to make his bed
I turned my head and chokingly said “I’ll pray for you”…
as a tear fell with his voice he said “God bless you too”
Oh, how the sadness began to eat at me…
for all the homeless, especially the military
They lay their life on the line so we can live…
their reward comes not from us, that we should give
Homes for the soldiers who have honorably served
and so much more they truly deserve
While we are safe where a pillow holds our heads…
within a long black casket, another soldier lay dead
He looked at me face to face…
and eye to eye without disgrace
He spoke to me then he said…
... “When does the peace ever begin”…

The tears I shed burn my eyes…
